Each semester, I have the privilege of talking with college students about what I do as a PR professional. I’ve always found it invigorating to hear from students about their hopes and aspirations, as they prepare to enter the world of public relations. It reminds me of what I enjoy so much about what I do for a living.

Around this time of year, the thoughts of most college students who are about to graduate turn to finding that first job. For many PR graduates, coming out of college in a tough economy, it’s about finding ANY job in public relations.

A few years ago, I enlisted the help of some of my colleagues at CRT/tanaka to offer some advice – 15 tips, if you will – to college students hoping to land their first PR job. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and the things included on the list are not rocket science. Hopefully, they offer a little insight to PR students about how they can stand out in a crowded job market. Here goes:

1. Get Internship Experience. Nothing is more impressive on a resume than experience. Get valuable internship experience while you are in college, and be willing to take an internship after graduation. It could lead to a full-time position.

2. Volunteer. Along with internships at corporations and PR agencies, consider interning or volunteering for non-profits. These organizations always need help, which offers interns great opportunities to get hands-on experience. While many non-profits may only offer unpaid internships, the experience you gain will pay dividends in your career.

3. Write, Write and Write Some More. Most employers in PR place a premium on strong writing skills. Find every opportunity to add writing samples to your portfolio. Join the student newspaper. Create a newsletter for a student organization or non-profit. Practice writing e-mails flawlessly. And get to know the AP Stylebook like the back of your hand.

If you aren’t the best proofer in the world, have someone review your material who is.

The company might not be hiring now, but could be two weeks from now. If you’ve made a good impression, they’re likely to remember you for the job.
If you look closely (and transform from college football fan to higher education professional), Alabama’s Eryk Anders kind of looks like a 2010 budget nightmare demolishing the ivory tower.

What a hit!

Many state supported colleges and universities are going to feel it this year. Watching how they dust themselves off, adapt and get back in the game will be fun to watch.

I anticipate pain for higher ed, but I also think we’ll see innovations emerge that reform and improve how campus communities deliver their education product. I’ll be looking for those innovations this year, and I’ll note them here when I see them.

Technology’s influence on delivering higher education also promises to continue hitting hard in 2010. Two stories caught my eye last week.

First, Inside Higher Education reported Jan. 8 that college libraries are increasingly open to text messaging as a channel for connecting research librarians with students.

OMG!

Second, just imagine what new touch screen tablet computers might do to libraries, text books, lectures, note taking and studying. This Jan. 4 video at the Wall Street Journal takes a glimpse at the future according to one book publisher. Check it out.

I’m looking forward to how it all plays out, and will try to provide some play-by-play commentary as it does.

Now, I think I’ll watch Garrett get creamed again.

At the same time, they’re streetwise enough share honest perceptions of campus life, academics, faculty, the dining hall and other brand-defining factors sure to come up in conversations with parents and friends over the holiday break.

A promise of pizza or a t-shirt ensures group turnout. Using a moderator not affiliated with university administration ensures lively, honest discussion.

It doesn’t have to be formal or expensive, but the resulting transcript will be pure gold for anyone responsible for optimizing recruitment and retention efforts in the new year.

Like the office holiday party, make a few early-December focus groups with freshmen an annual tradition.

Pure gold.

For focus group tips, start here.

Higher education isn’t seeing many ‘green shoots’ yet in this recession. In fact, it’s winter this August as students come back to campus.

Here’s some of what’s causing the chill.

To keep up with peers, many institutions binged over the years on new facilities, swanky dorms and more dining options than a mall food court. Now, like their debt-saddled students, many are scrambling to make ends meet.

Demographic trends aren’t helping, either. In this recession, prospective students are increasingly considering community colleges and close-to-home options. On top of that, the number of students graduating from high school over the next few years is predicted to decrease in many states.

Indeed, one can feel the summer chill in recent higher education headlines:

And great fodder for marketing/communications content.

Every speaker that comes to campus, every career fair, every club meeting, every social activity, every frisbee toss on the quad and every commencement presents an opportunity to share the university experience and connect in positive, meaningful ways.

Thanks for the reminder, Eric.

There must be something we can do that frisbee. Any ideas?

Higher education is the BMOC in the world of social media.

The Society for New Communications Research reports that “colleges and universities are outpacing U.S. corporate adoption of social media tools” and the National Association of College Admissions Counseling finds that a majority of colleges maintain a presence in social media. Nearly 90% of admissions offices believe social media is “somewhat” or “very” important to future recruitment efforts.

Check the numbers here and here.

But social media as a college recruitment strategy needs more than the requisite clever videos, student blogs, informational Twitter streams and Ning networks.

It needs genuine, enthusiastic and positive conversation from current students about their institution across their own social media platforms and connections.

This kind of conversation cannot be mandated. But it can be seeded, cultivated and allowed to grow organically across social networks – a process that begins with a little brainstorming on campus.

What makes our students tick?

What makes them laugh?

What makes them proud?

What can we do new or differently on campus to tap and unleash these emotions?

What can we do on campus to show appreciation for students?

What can we do to encourage online conversations around these ideas and other campus activities/events?

Admissions and student affairs staff that collaborate on these questions this summer will have some great ideas for campus activities that start conversations this fall, which students will undoubtedly take into the viral online world of social media.

Let them do the talking.
