Alex Rampy of SocialButterfly talks specifically about using the amount of Twitter followers for fundraising. She offers seven tips to make the “follow-and-fundraise” plan work. Her first advice is to wait and gain a “solid, respectable following.” Then she says to set realistic and attainable benchmarks as well as realistic rewards. Share and extend the initiative beyond technology and keep the momentum going with relevant content. Make the campaign fun and always follow-up with the participants. What do you think of Alex’s tips?

HarvardBusiness.org revealed results from a study they conducted in May regarding Twitter users’ tweeting habits. The study shows that the “top 10% of Twitter users account for 90% of Twitter’s content” and suggests that “Twitter users are not publishers, but are searchers or passive users.”Marketer Insight’s Eric Dudley says the “this study should give marketers caution to invest too much time and energy on Twitter just yet without a proven business case.” Do you agree with Eric? What are your Twitter habits?

Social media’s popularity has captured the attention of many companies. These companies, such as Verizon, are now using the tool as “an effective channel to reach out to their consumers in their personal space.” Carrie Magelowitz discusses how Verizon launched two new products in light of social media: the Widget Bazaar application store and Internet Video of TV. Both products work with Verizon’s media service FiOS and allows consumers to view social networking programs via TV. “She says this is just one example of a band innovating themselves to appeal to their audience.” Do you have examples? Share them at digital exercise.

Do you still need a blog?” Lena Claxton of New Media Mavens discusses the importance of a blog. She says with the abundance of social media sites, many companies think “having a business blog is redundant.” Lena defends blogs saying they are the “best ways to connect with your audience on an ongoing basis…[and] nothing boosts search engine rankings better than a blog that is updated frequently.” Do you think blogging is dead?
